Hana Carpenter's Background

Hana Carpenter holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Auckland, is currently completing a Master of Visual Arts, and teaches Painting at Diocesan School for Girls, Auckland.

Hana (b. Te Kūiti) is a Tāmaki Makaurau-based artist of Scottish, Irish, and Danish ancestry. Her practice engages with the visual and material legacy of settler colonialism in Aotearoa, working primarily within European painting traditions. Through the tactility of paint and the physical act of drawing and erasure, she investigates the symbolism of the line – both as a mark and as metaphor for the boundaries, inheritances, and erasures of colonial history. Hana describes the line as: “my colonial inheritance.”

For her framing, she incorporates cedar salvaged from organ pipes in St Paul’s Church, Waiwhetū, Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai (Lower Hutt) – a church situated within Section 19, land taken from Te Ātiawa iwi during WWII. The material context underscores her interrogation of settler presence and the uneasy beauty of inherited structures.

Her work has been recognised as a finalist in numerous national awards, including the National Contemporary Art Award, the Parkin Drawing Prize, the Wellington Regional Art Awards, the Walker and Hall Art Awards, the NZ Painting and Printmaking Awards, and the Wallace Awards.
