Soft dark mountains lean toward each other across still water, the sun caught somewhere between rising and setting – that hour that never quite picks a side. It has the hazy warmth of a memory you’ve told yourself so many times it’s become its own kind of true. Kyla paints NZ’s ever-changing sky and sea not for accuracy, but for the peace they leave behind. This one lingers.

Auckland artist Kyla is a painter of light, her landscapes capturing fleeting moments where the sun rises and sets. Often referred to as the golden hour, this magic second when the sun hits the landscape in all its glory is one the eye can hardly see for a moment, which creates a scene of mystery and Romanticism. This can be seen in Kyla’s 2023 series Coastal Walk, where the composition is such that the light is fully the subject of her work.
