Etched in profile, a woman’s face holds a whole voyage in her hair – a sailing ship caught mid-passage, a feather that’s landed and stayed, and from somewhere behind her skull, a flock of black birds taking off into the unknown. Even the swimmer drifting through the background seems caught in the same pull, moving as if she, too, is answering some old, wordless instinct to leave and return.

Prue is an established artist working in the field of printmaking, with a degree in printmaking from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland (1985). Upon graduating, she was awarded the Annual Prize of Excellence in Fine Arts and has since developed a successful practice with postgraduate study at international art schools and exhibitions around New Zealand. Prue’s work often references the masters, using chiaroscuro and theatrical drama to evoke an emotional response. This can be seen in her 2019 work Miss New Zealand, with a tight composition, which invites the viewer to get intimate with this figurative work.
