Dark clay, shot through with marbled coils, folds gently in on itself as it curves upward, much like harbour walls reaching around to cradle a sheltered bay. Pauls form feels protective and contained, a place where things come to rest. The lighter threads of marbling move through the surface like currents, a choppy swirl of water breaking against the shadowed clay, while the form itself stays steady and sheltering.

Paul Herbert is an Auckland ceramic artist who works with marbled clay to create vessels and sculpture drawing on nature, the human form, ritual and belief. Beginning with coiled vessels he has moved into figurative work, exploring how the human figure and organic shapes echo one another. A finalist in the Quarry Ceramic Awards, Waiclay National Ceramics Awards and Ceramics NZ National Exhibition, Paul continues to experiment with pattern, texture and form.
