Sally Smith's Background
Waiheke artist Sally Smith holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Auckland (1993) and had her own practice until 2010 when she transitioned into a full time art practice. She has also been running her own gallery and her work is held in both public and private collections internationally with representation in the USA and France.
Sally creates sculptures that have no boundaries, they naturally consider architectural spaces through composition and arrangement. She is interested in exploring the space between her objects, as each piece installed sweeps across a wall space using light and shadow as well to complete the work.
In her wall installation Shoaling Nine (2023), Sally has created a versatile piece that considers light, space and movement. Inspired by the green blue ocean around Waiheke. In her work On Dusk 30 (2023), migrating birds travel in unison, with finely honed perspective in this versatile wall installation celebrating nature.
Within the sculptures themselves is a concern for the environment, its uniqueness captured through the materials Sally uses to enhance and reflect nature. She gleans inspiration from her Waiheke Island surroundings, and her bronze sculpture Rau Tapu (2023) was inspired by the fragility of plants as well as their significance to our survival. In this piece she uses hard materials to expertly emulate our concerns for nature.
