Robin Ranga's Background

Multi-media Waikato artist Robin Ranga holds a BVA in painting from AUT and has been making full time since 2005. She was a finalist in the 2010 Portage Ceramic Awards, and in 2016 she was invited to the renowned Nongyuan International Arts Village, in Chengdu, China, which was a formative experience for her practice. Her work in ceramics has won recognition for its emotive qualities.

Robin Ranga’s small, figurative sculptures provoke an emotive response, as she draws you in with delicate terracotta folds that adorn figures that we can only see from behind, as though they are walking towards something together, perhaps a more hopeful future.

Hope, reflection and compassion are deeply embedded within Robin’s work. The emotional journey she takes you on first begins with fascination, wondering about these small figures hand moulded in earthen materials. The journey continues as you read these figures and their movements, drawn to what story Robin might be wishing to tell you through their bodies.

In her collective work They rose to celebrate Liberty, from dust whence they came by, so much can be read in each figure, of which you only see half of. Each woman sculpted is unique, perhaps offering some wisdom to the viewer on how humanity is made stronger when we come together.

Robin’s captivating small sculptures add character and depth to any setting, with thoughtful moments of reflection as well as innate beauty in their construction. These ceramics are modern yet classical.
