Rachel Murphy's Background
Rachel Murphy is a West Auckland-based ceramicist known for her exquisite porcelain vessels that embody the beauty of local landscapes.
Born in Christchurch, she spent part of her childhood in Holland before returning to Auckland, where she grew up in the picturesque Titirangi area of the Waitakere Ranges. As a young adult, Rachel lived in Sydney, Australia, and Scotland, which deepened her connection to the land, architecture, and diverse cultures. Primarily self-taught, Rachel specializes in porcelain slip casting, mastering techniques over years of practice. She learned the basics from Jo Nuttall, a glass casting artist in Auckland, while studying for a Bachelor of Design. After 15 years in furniture and interior design, Rachel transitioned to ceramics in 2012 and became a full-time artist in 2014.
Her work captures the essence of New Zealand’s natural beauty, often inspired by walks along rugged west coast beaches or through lush bushland. Rachel frequently incorporates 24k gold leaf into her pieces, adding a touch of opulence and luminosity. Recently, she has expanded her artistry to include gilded leaves, enhancing her work with intricate details that celebrate nature’s simplicity. With a focus on form and texture, Rachel invites viewers to appreciate the harmony between art and the natural world in every creation.
