Matthew Carter holds a masters in art and design from Auckland University of Technology and upon graduating, he won the Glaister Ennor Graduate Art Award (2009). He exhibits in Auckland regularly, and his work is held in private collections around the world as well as in the Arts House Trust collection in Auckland.

On his work he says: “My painting attempts to engage with shifts in time and space by looking at how these relate to the spatio-psychology of the city.”

Matthew’s recent lavishly painted homage to Jean-Luc Godard’s classic gangster film Band of Outsiders also fits with his interest in urban scapes. This still, shot in the Louvre, is full of excitement and sophistication which is expertly captured by his brush. Matthew’s interest in urban life is captured in this high contrast, high perspective piece that echoes Edward Hopper’s famous diner in Nighthawks.
