Based in a seaside village north of Auckland, Lucy works from her home studio alongside her husband and three children.
Lucy Rice is a New Zealand-based abstract painter whose work explores the intersection of physical and emotional landscapes. Drawing on her experiences of place, memory, emotion, and grief, she transforms them into layered, intuitive paintings using acrylics and oil pastels. Her practice emphasizes the dynamic interplay of colour, shape, and expressive mark-making, crafting works that radiate energy and evoke unique atmospheres.
Educated at Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland (BFA, 2005–2008), Lucy has exhibited widely and is represented in prestigious galleries across Australia and New Zealand, including Leighton Contemporary (Noosa), Gallery Thirty Three (Wanaka), and Artform Gallery (Matakana). Her work has been recognized through awards such as finalist placements at the Walker & Hall Awards (2025) and NZPPA (Highly Commended, 2025).
She describes her practice as “softening the divide between what is outside and what is felt within, creating a quiet meeting place where transcendence begins to take shape,” reflecting the contemplative, emotive qualities of her work.
