Self-taught Wellington based artist Catherine Roberts has been painting for over twenty years, finding her voice through experimentation and free expression. Over this time, she has developed her own unique layering techniques that create depth and balance within her works. Texture is as much a part of Catherine’s paintings as the imagery, which work hand in hand to build an immersive experience.

Catherine is led by her own intuition as well as her coastal surroundings on Wellington’s weathered south coast where the ocean meets the rocky shoreline right on her doorstep. This can be seen in her recent painting A Fanciful Mind, which captures the alchemy of the weather, and its profound ability to shift and change before our eyes.

Much of Catherine’s paintings exist in a sublime realm, such as with Ruminate, which captures the imagination as the moody clouds obscure light and dwell above the ocean as though they are in a moment of indecision about where or when to deliver their storm.

Each painting is a uniquely serene moment of escape using natural forces to create a sublimely intimate landscape, inspired by native bush, ocean and sky. Just as you forget you are lost within a world of paint, seeing only the burgeoning shifts in the sky and sea, you will be jolted back to reality upon spotting a delightful paint drip dancing down the canvas. There to remind you that this is an alternative world of silken paint and resin.
