Belinda Griffiths's Background

Belinda Griffiths lives and works in Auckland. She is a graduate of AUT with a Bachelor of Design, and the Browne School of Art where she is also a tutor. Belinda was awarded a Merit in the 2021 Parkin Prize, and won the 2013 Molly Morpeth Canaday Award and Estuary Art Award. She is represented by Föenander Galleries, Auckland and Solander Gallery, Wellington.

Working within the disciplines of painting and printmaking, Belinda is a master of gesture and expression as figures within her paintings are formed and moved by the visceral energy she puts into every brush stroke. The emotion that emerges from two figures bathed in a golden glow is potent in her Inflection diptych. Her delicate portrait In the Harsh Light of Day is bathed in a whirlwind of gestural brushstrokes, exquisitely communicating the human experience.

In Golden Birds, wind whips about a departing figure, leaving elemental brushstrokes as a visceral reminder of art’s expressive power. And in When the Blackbird Flew Out of Site, Belinda was inspired by a Wallace Stevens poem titled Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird, a painting observing human connection.

Belinda’s monochromatic portraits and prints are poetry in motion, leaving the viewer in awe and captivating anyone who encounters them. They have the potential to bring contemplation to an interior, or an energy boost depending on your choice of pieces.
