Henk paints in black on black, and the figures only surface when you shift your weight. Step to one side and a face emerges; step back and it dissolves into the dark. The title borrows an image of collective effort and sacrifice, but here the lifting is done by bodies that are barely there. Grief and devotion are held in the gesture, never spelled out.

Henk Tomkins
Henk Tomkins is an Auckland-based painter whose work blends gestural abstraction and screen printing to explore the raw intensity of human emotion. Informed by his background in dance, Tomkins uses movement and instinct to trace fleeting emotional states, creating visceral, unresolved works that reflect the complexities of being and feeling in a fractured world.
