A diptych of two closely related pieces, Sink and Anchor sees Prakash lay a grid of tiny gold and bronze circles across black canvas – some bold and dense, others fading to a whisper. The effect is quietly hypnotic, oscillating between structure and dissolve. Together, the pair speak to gravity and drift, holding and letting go, each canvas anchoring the other.

Prakash Patel was born and raised in Whanganui, where he still lives and works. His paintings translate a lifelong negotiation between his Gujarati heritage and provincial New Zealand into fields of pattern, dot and iridescent colour – surfaces that shift between night sky, ocean floor and microscopic world. Prakash has exhibited widely throughout New Zealand and is held in the Sarjeant Gallery’s permanent collection.
