Drawing on Ara’s research into materiality in ancient Mesopotamia, this piece speaks to lapis lazuli – the rare blue stone once prized by Mesopotamia’s elite not only as a luxury material, but as a symbol of the celestial night sky and the divine order of the cosmos, appearing in myth as the very substance of the sacred Tablet of Destinies. Rendered in deep blues, greens and gold, its eccentric, layered form brings a striking sense of colour, myth and history into a room.
