Bobbie Gray’s installations surface what’s usually hidden, whether magnifying borer trails in heritage timber or transforming single-use plastics into luminous native flora.

Auckland-based artist Bobbie is a multidisciplinary force whose practice encompasses sculpture, moving image, painting, installation, curation, and project development. A 2017 graduate with a BFA from Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design, Bobbie has emerged as a visionary artist committed to sustainability, community engagement, and transcultural exploration. Her work, exhibited locally and internationally, captivates audiences with its innovative use of recycled materials and environmental focus.

Bobbie’s groundbreaking project Kowhai Grove, commissioned by Tauranga City Council, transforms a downtown laneway with thousands of Kowhai flowers crafted from community-sourced plastic recyclables, illuminated by programmable LEDs. This immersive installation invites reflection on humanity’s environmental impact. Internationally, her video installation Digital Garden graced Coventry Cathedral’s walls in the UK. At the same time, Resident Alien featured in the Windows 98 touring exhibition in Iran, and another work illuminated The Medina of Tunis, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

In 2019, Bobbie’s residency in Cassis, France, alongside eight international artists, enriched her practice with diverse cultural perspectives, deepening her exploration of art and ecology. As the founder of Comet Project Space in 2017, she created a dynamic platform for community-driven art and collaboration, evolving from an artist-run initiative to a vibrant pop-up gallery fostering creative dialogue.

Bobbie’s practice, blending bold materiality with environmental consciousness, continues to push boundaries, inspiring audiences worldwide to reconsider their relationship with the planet through art that is both transformative and inclusive.
