Jamie Chapman's Background

Jamie Chapman is an Auckland based artist with a masters from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland, with prior study at Whitecliffe. In 2012, Jamie was awarded the University of Auckland’s Joe Raynes Scholarship, and in 2013 he won the National Youth Art Award. His work is held in the Arts House Trust collection.

Jamie’s innate understanding of colour principles, and his control of the brush empower him to explore unique colour palettes within his abstract landscapes and contemporary portraiture work. The results are cinematic, bringing in themes of still and moving imagery to his compositions.

In his 2023 painting Tall Tales, Jamie creates a photorealist painting that shifts our sense of reality, assisted by a slight blur, adding to the mystique of this piece. In Cloud Structure (2023), a pink sky holds a vast landscape of clouds at what could be sunset or sunrise, painted in a blurred photorealist style.

In Smoke Stacks Red (2023), brilliant blues and pinks captivate across this indelible sky scene, a tranquil painting like no other. Jamie’s image based painting practice is like no other, his composition, cropped and reframed, asks audiences to reflect on their own narratives that can be found within his paintings, exploring media and the landscape.
