Garry Currin's Background

Northland artist Garry Currin has been painting and exhibiting for over forty years. His paintings are celebrated here and beyond our shores, being included in the PyeongChang Biennale in South Korea (2017) as well as in the Lloyd Rees Art Prize in Australia (2015). He is a master of his craft, as he paints with incredible technique, form, texture and layering.

Painting on a large, atmospheric scale, Garry is able to create a level of drama within his mixing of paint and subject matter. On viewing the work, there is a sense that it could have been from a dream or a space we have seen before, creating a connection to the 19th century genre of Romantic Realism yet with an innate contemporary connection to New Zealand scenery.

Garry’s paintings offer a multi-sensory experience of our environment, taking the landscape genre to a new level. It is not so much about the locale he paints, but what he interprets from it. There are glimpses of familiar textures and tones of the land, as it is the atmosphere that is the subject of his work.

In Voices of Earth, viewers will get lost in Garry’s timeless yet contemporary interpretation of an old wordly New Zealand landscape. In The Light of One Day III, mood creates an ethereal scene. Atoms and Opinions is a poetic interpretation of the landscape.
