Monique Lacey's Background
Auckland artist Monique Lacey holds an MFA (First Class Hons) from Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design (2018), where she spent her years of study honing her interiors background into a full time painting and sculpture practice.
Working from her central city studio, Monique continues to define her place within the legacy of female sculpture. She was a finalist in the Waikato Museum’s National Contemporary Art Award (2018) and exhibits regularly in Australia and New Zealand.
Monique’s approach to making is physical and intellectual, as she begins by physically destroying cardboard boxes. As they collapse under pressure, they become the basis of what could be considered a relief painting replete with baroque finishes in gold, silver or resin.
Minimalism and Feminism drive the concepts behind her work. The surfaces of her work are a primary concern, some crackled, some gilded, others almost liquid. Her experimental process has ultimately refined into a stunning practice that sits between painting and sculpture.
In Backbone, a sublime coating of gold adorns a cardboard box, presenting a witty miniature monument to female power. Monique’s piece Terms of Entanglement 2, is an alluring, complex sculpture exploring themes of entanglement. Smoke and Mirrors is a classic piece from Monique’s oeuvre, a highly contemporary, collectible small wall sculpture to complement a collection.
